VOLUME FREAK
MIXMAG Feb 2004
If you think techno’s soulless and lacks warmth you haven’t been listening lately. So there’s no confusion: the first single from ‘Volume Freak’, ‘Emotional Content’, is the best, sexiest and warmest techno record since ‘Knights Of The Jaguar’. This is proper music with feeling, from the epic opener to the pimpin’ swagger of ‘5 To 12’ to the acidic bump of ‘All That Matters’, Lars demonstrates that it aint about the machines, it’s all about what you do with them. 5/5
DJ Mag 6 – 19 Feb
Recent DJmag cover star Funk D\'Void, aka Scottish techno don Lars Sandberg, is back with his second album and as a follow up to the brilliant 2001-released \'Dos\' this is well worth the wait. Included is recent single \'Emotional Content\', which caused serious dancefloor damage when it came out on promo last year. Surrounding that are ten other tracks that undulate between peak-time dancefloor numbers and more mellow, deeper set crooners. Thrown in too is a brand new, Heavenly remix of the 2001-released \'Diabla\', injecting a new burst of energy into that brilliant original. Apart from that though, this is all fresh material. If you haven\'t bought an album yet this year, make a fresh start with this one. 4.5/5

Arguably Scotland’s finest dance export, Lars Sandberg – aka Funk D’Void – does techno like no one else. Setting out its stall with the fittingly titled Emotional Content, Volume Freak proceeds to kick into touch that techno is necessarily dry, soullness and mechanical. While the highlight is club staple Diabla (a goose pimple-inducing slice of progressive perfection), there is an embarrassment of quality throughout, from the funky 5To 12 to a brooding Endless. Anoraks may appreciate the records for its technical brilliance, but it boasts the emotional scope of classical music – something beautiful that you don’t have to understand to enjoy. 4.5/5
